Introduction
You are looking at a quote, and you see the material listed: “5-Layer Co-ex / 70% LDPE / 30% HDPE.”
Your eyes glaze over. You just want a tube that feels good in the hand and squeezes easily. Why is there so much chemistry involved?
In the world of extruded plastic tubes, Density = Feel.
The difference between LDPE (Low Density), HDPE (High Density), and MDPE (Medium Density) isn't just about weight—it determines whether your tube feels like soft velvet or rigid cardstock.
Here is the "SampoX Touch Guide" to help you choose without a chemistry degree.
The Feel:
Tactile: Very soft, flexible, and "squeezable."
Surface: Naturally glossy and shiny.
Sound: Silent when squeezed.
The Superpower: Restitution (Bounce-back)
LDPE has excellent memory. After you squeeze it, it immediately sucks air back in and returns to its round shape. It doesn't leave permanent dents.
Best Application:
Facial Cleansers & Lotions: Products that are used daily and need to be squeezed effortlessly.
Travel Sizes: Small tubes need to be softer to be squeezable.
The Feel:
Tactile: Rigid, stiff, and harder to deform.
Surface: Naturally matte and slightly rougher.
Sound: Makes a "crinkly" sound when squeezed hard.
The Superpower: Protection
HDPE is tougher. It offers better resistance to aggressive chemicals and moisture. However, pure HDPE is too stiff—if you squeeze it, it stays creased (like a milk jug).
Best Application:
Industrial use or huge volumes: Where durability matters more than "hand feel." (Rarely used 100% pure in premium cosmetics).
The Feel:
Not too soft, not too hard. It’s the perfect middle ground.
The Reality:
In modern manufacturing, we rarely use just one. We create a "Custom Blend."
Most "MDPE" tubes on the market are actually a physical mix of LDPE and HDPE pellets during extrusion.
The SampoX Ratio:
Want a Luxury Matte finish but still want it to squeeze easily? We use an HDPE outer layer (for the matte look) and an LDPE inner layer (for flexibility).
This is the beauty of Co-extrusion. We give you the best of both worlds.
Don't overthink the acronyms. Just tell us the experience you want:
"I want it Super Soft & Glossy" ➡ Go for LDPE.
"I want a Matte Finish & more Structure" ➡ Go for MDPE (a roughly 50/50 blend).
"I need it to stand up straight and feel rigid" ➡ Go for a blend high in HDPE.
Still not sure?
